Launch Event December 14, 2011
It was about 7 years ago that NABFEME named me their “Executive to Watch.” At the time, I was not exactly sure why this organization considered me as someone to “Watch.” Nevertheless, the designation drove me to work hard, work outside the box and work to leave a legacy for women who will come after me. It created a desire in me to develop something that was worth watching therefore, being ordinary was not an option.
While working with the Black Star News in New York City and the ABC Affiliate in Connecticut, my association with the NABFEME New York Network opened my eyes to the importance of organizations like NABFEME and the importance of having access to the support of a sisterhood for women in the entertainment industry.
After a year in the entertainment industry in Nigeria, I have had the opportunity to talk to a significant number of women in the Nigerian entertainment industry from musicians, to actresses and executives; they have all expressed the same sentiment – the noticeable lack of support for women in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
Nigeria is the entertainment capital of Africa; I believe if this problem exists in Nigeria, it must also exist in many other parts of Africa. The first thing that came to my mind was that I should begin a NABFEME Africa Network in order to provide a solution to the problem and foster a positive environment for women in music and entertainment in my country. As a result, I reached out to Ms Johnnie Walker who was very gracious and offered to lend her support in making this happen.
I am excited to announce on December 14, 2011 we will launch NABFEME Africa! Women in various fields of entertainment will converge in Nigeria to join our American sisters for a day of Sisterhood. Our Inaugural event will be held at The Oriental Hotel in Lagos,Nigeria … hosted by “Industry Night,” a weekly gathering held in Lagos that promotes the entertainment industry in Nigeria.
