Terry Avery
Program Director, Davis Broadcasting
In Urban radio, the name Terry Avery should
be as common as turntable and microphone. Both are or have
been integral parts in any radio station and functional to
its operation
the same can be said for the career of
Terry Avery. Terry's history making career got its first boost
when she was named Program Director of KMJQ in 1987. Terry's
success in the Houston market did not go unnoticed as management
in Dallas at KKDA summoned her to be an essential part in
the development of the K-104 powerhouse! In 1989 she was named
Operations Manager of KKDA. Success continued as Mercury Records,
home of Vanessa Williams, Toni Tony Tone, Brian McKnight and
others, grabbed Terry as their Southwest Regional Promotions
Manager.
Though she was equally successful in marketing
records as she was in marketing radio, Terry's love for programming
brought her back to radio. In 1993 she dusted off her mike,
packed up those wonderful "Terryisms" and went to
Baltimore to join radio maven Cathy Hughes at radio One, Inc.
She was named Director of Programming for WWIN-AM, WWIN-FM
WMMJ and WERQ!
Always a beat ahead, between 1998 and 1999
Terry served as Special Projects Administrator for the National
Association of Broadcasters coordinating meetings and conventions,
while acting as a communications liaison between radio and
the FCC. Today, Terry Avery serves as Program Director for
Davis Broadcasting managing WFXE, WKZJ and WOKS. While maintaining
high Arbitron numbers for the Davis cluster, Terry is also
a freelance writer; you can catch her writing skills in the
"Ask Personality" column in the Urban network Magazine.
