KATHI MOORE
Vice President, Urban Promotion, Restless Records
When Restless Records was faced with being
a floating ship with no captain and high sink potential
the thought of repeating the fate of the Titanic was not a
part of the company's marketing plan. Rather than watch the
ship sink, you get a captain that can keep it afloat
you get Kathi Renee Moore, NABFEME's Executive of The Month!
Between 1996 and 1999, as Red Ant's Vice
President of Promotion and Marketing, Urban Music, Kathi Moore
was the catalyst that propelled the label and its artists
to the forefront of the music industry. From demanding schedules
with artists, to departmental budgets, to maintaining a full
staff, Kathi Moore proved to be Red Ant's superwoman.
A master saleswoman, known for her award-winning
smile and unique talent for winning radio stations and propelling
artists into stardom, Kathi Moore graduated from Herbert Lehman
College in 1986. Following six (6) years of college, Kathi
moved into the ranks of management and was named National
Director of Promotion, Black Music RCA.
The trip from Lehman College to RCA, to
Red Ant to Restless Records took hard work, but that's exactly
what Kathi Moore is made of. Kathi's entrance into "the
biz" began in 1984 when she became an intern in the CBS/Columbia
internship program for minority students. This position showed
Kathi that the excitement of the music industry was just what
she was looking for. In the fall of '84 with a little free
time from her studies, Kathi took another internship at WFAS
in White Plains, New York.
Then in the summer of '85 she interned once
again at CBS, this time in marketing and sales. Her last gig
as an intern came when she was promoted to the position of
Classical Rep for CBS Masterworks. At this point in her career
Kathi was anxious to become a permanent fixture in the recording
industry, but never one to take anything for granted, after
getting her college degree, she got her real estate license,
"a sort of back up insurance" Kathi notes.
Kathi Moore got her first taste of being
an executive in the music industry in 1986 with Jimi Starks
at Epic Records as National Secondary Promotion Manager. While
at Epic, Kathi attributes Sandra Trim-DaCosta as one of the
mentors that helped shaped her executive career. Kathi's next
move came with NABFEME Shero Sharon Heyward, who gave Kathi
a shot as Northeast Regional Promotion Manger for Virgin records.
Four years at Virgin brought the next move in 1990 as Kathi
was named National Director of Marketing at Arista Records.
After two years at Arista, Kathi went looking for bigger fish
to fry and in 1992 was named National Director of Promotion,
RCA. Referring to the move, Kathi says, "they made an
offer that I couldn't refuse."
Pinpointing a long-range goal, Kathi says,
"I'd like to make a lot of money and then turn it into
some wise real estate investments." With her real estate
background, keen sense and incredible savvy, we know Kathi
can make it happen!
