Executive Power Mover

Lamonda Williams

Program Director - WCDX Richmond, VA

Her career has been full of fortunate opportunities that Lamonda Williams calls “blessings.” It all started at KJLH in 1991. While still a senior at the University of Southern California, Lamonda applied to become a programming intern. As she recalls, “I technically did not qualify to be an intern. I had already completed my course work.” But nonetheless, Lynn Briggs, who was then PD, gave her the opportunity. Later while completing her Master’s Degree in Communications at Temple University in Philadelphia, Lamonda secured two other radio positions at WRTI and WUSL/Power 99.

According to Lamonda, some of her earliest radio experiences continue to motivate her today. “I have been so blessed, I cannot let myself down. I cannot let my Creator down. So many people support my career. I’ve been conditioned to succeed.”

In the early stages of her career, it was this type of conditioning that led Lamonda Williams to WTIC-FM in Hartford, CT, where she worked as a music research supervisor. Later, she moved to WZMX-FM in Hartford as an on air personality… then to WNHC in New Haven, CT as PD and next to WPHI-FM in Philadelphia where she was the APD. Last year (2000), Lamonda Williams was hired to her current position of PD at WCDX-FM in Richmond, VA.

Lamonda says what she enjoys most about her current position is being able to create exciting promotions for her listeners, as well as being involved in her staff’s well being. “I like being able to train the on air staff and being able to put a stamp on WCDX… giving it its personality.” Overall, she says her goal as PD is “to identify the station with the city.” When people come to Richmond, I want them to feel the vibe of the city through the station.”

A goal oriented person, Lamonda Williams prides herself in working hard and staying focused. She doesn’t take her opportunities for granted. I have a goal. I have to prove myself to my company. I have to program successfully. I can’t half step. Who am I not to give 100 percent to the opportunities that I’ve been given?”

Although she has gained precious experience throughout her career, Lamonda Williams says she still remains committed to learning - and giving back to others the same type of opportunities that have been given to her. “When I see that people are hungry - I want to help them and teach them as much as I can.”
